Properties of Iran GPPS

One of the most common thermoplastics around the globe is polystyrene (PS). It is produced in many grades, each suitable for specific applications.

Polystyrene generally can be divided into three groups: general purpose polystyrene (GPPS), high impact polystyrene (HIPS), and expanded polystyrene (EPS). Each one of them has unique properties, making them suitable for specific applications.

Iran GPPS manufacturers proudly proclaim that they produce their various grades according to the global standards, and their properties can compete with or even best their foreign competition.

Produced from Styrene Monomer’s polymerization, Iran GPPS is a synthetic aromatic long chain hydrocarbon polymer with alternating carbon centers attached to phenyl groups. It has a density of about 1.05 g/cm3 and is in a solid (glassy) state at room temperature, but when heated to about 100 °C and higher, it turns into a fluid.

General purpose polystyrene (GPPS) has a density of 1.04 to 1.09 g/cm3, transparency of up to 88% -92%, a refractive index of about 1.59 to 1.60. Such a high refractive index has made it polystyrene with good gloss and gives it a decorative effect. It also demonstrates high stiffness and good dimensional stability.

Here are some other properties that further demonstrate the advantageousness of Iran GPPS:

  1. Low cost compared to other materials
  2. Easy to paint, glue, and print on
  3. Excellent aesthetic qualities
  4. excellent electrical properties
  5. good weatherability and very low moisture absorption
  6. non-toxic (FDA compliant)
  7. free from odor and taste
  8. easy to process
  9. excellent flow properties
  10. low shrinkage
  11. excellent X-ray resistance

Iran GPPS also has inadequate chemical resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, moderate resistance to alcohols, and suitable to excellent resistance to some dilute acids, dilute Alkalis, and aliphatic Hydrocarbons, and oils and Greases.

The ‘non-biodegradable’ plastic buildup in the environment leading to prolonged decompose degradation may result in severe consequences in the near future. So, to consider, ‘Reprocessed GPPS Plastic’ might be a sublime option in a series of solutions to this problem.

Secondary (recycled) general purpose polystyrene (GPPS) is produced from polymeric leftovers. It is a multistage course of waste processing, which requires the use of high-tech equipment.

Recycled GPPS is a suitable replacement for product manufacturers to embrace new technologies by reducing costs and shortening release times.

Iran GPPS is produced in the form of cylindrical granules or spherical grains by Iranian manufacturers.

If the GPPS required by the customer needs to be in the form of powder, Iranian manufacturers can also accommodate. During GPPS granulation, various additives, such as anti-block agents, antioxidants, and UV stabilizers, in various amounts are added to the multiple grades produced.

Application of Iran GPPS

The exceptional properties of Iran GPPS, such as high stiffness and transparency, have made it an ideal choice for many applications.

Another reason for its extensive usage is due to its low cost, ease of processing, and wide range of grades. Iran GPPS can be used in injection moulding, extrusion blow molding, and thermoforming applications.

Iran GPPS is used to produce various household products such as disposable tableware, packaging, toys, etc. some items for the construction industry, such as insulation boards, left-in-place formwork, and sandwich panels, are also made from GPPS.

Some of the other products manufactured from Iran GPPS are:

  1. Thin wall packaging
  2. Extrusion Foamed packaging
  3. Disposable housewares and cutlery
  4. Sorting boxes
  5. toys and novelties
  6. rigid packaging
  7. medical equipment
  8. Finishing and decorative materials

Iran GPPS is also used to produce thin films (up to 100 μm or up to 20 μm) mixed with SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) copolymers). These films are effectively used in the packaging and confectionery industries and the production of capacitors.

Price and market

The polystyrene market has been growing swiftly since the last few years, and an increase is also expected in the coming years. The rising demand for the product drives the global polystyrene market.

The global demand reached nearly 18.6 million metric tons, and the market is estimated to raise more than US$28 bn by 2020 as per the industry analysis. The market was estimated at US$ 24bn in 2016.

The demand is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.9% between 2021 and 2026.

It is expected to come to a volume of 20.8 million metric tons. The major factors driving the polystyrene market are population progression and increasing urbanization and industrialization.

The construction and the electronics industry support the polystyrene market significantly. The polystyrene market is ominously influenced by downstream consumers like the construction industry and electronics industry. The speedy growth of the construction industry is positively affecting the polystyrene industry.

This growth is due to its extensive use for insulation purposes as it has to compete only with cotton wool in this segment.

Also, the rising use of general-purpose polystyrene in consumer electronic devices supports the growth of the industry, having a consumption rate of around 20%.

But the Iran GPPS market is also subjected to some restrains in the estimated period, such as unstable raw material prices (benzene, styrene monomer, etc.) due to the oscillations in the price of crude oil and natural gas.

Dumping problems related to this material and its negative scrap value may also hinder the market’s growth.

The changes mentioned above in the market affect the price of Iran GPPS too. Generally, Iran GPPS price varies according to type, grade, and the supplier of polystyrene.
