Introduction of Iran DRI (Sponge Iron)
Iran DRI (Sponge Iron) producers incorporated reaffirmed focus to develop and produce the best quality of product with inventive approach open for flexible solution sowing the seed of multiple yields.
With such dimension of the notion in our DRI (Sponge Iron) Manufacturing process through MIDREX Kiln; we have laid up the best DRI making process in Iran; Gas based DRI (sponge iron).
Gas based Sponge iron is a metallic product that comes from the direct reduction of iron ore in the solid state. Iron Ore Pellets is used for reduction and after reduction of iron ore pellet, the product resembles sponge because of pores left behind after removal of oxygen.
Iran DRI (Sponge Iron)
Iran DRI (Sponge Iron) as a substitute of scrap in steel melting is produced in a Direct Reduction Process. Although the reduction in the kiln is not direct, the CO gas reduces the impurities and oxides of hematite and the resultant DRI is in the solid form. Gas based DRI process mainly prefers on account of better non-contaminated Iron (Fe) for steel making instead of facing crisis of good quality scrap, international/ national demand of solid metallic.
We catch process resultant fuel gasses in Energy conservation process in Iran DRI (Sponge Iron) plants. These Processes are at high temperatures of around 950°C from the sponge iron kiln; constituting a significant amount of heat energy. Thus, we achieve about 85% recovery of waste heat from fuel gasses of Sponge Iron kiln. Utilizing from same heat to produce steam. Therefore, the steam further utilizes to generate electrical energy.

Despite the sanctions, Iran has kept its position of being the second biggest producer of Sponge Iron in the world up to 2019 and has been announced as the world’s largest producer of sponge iron for the first five months of this year, despite the most severe sanctions. At the same time, it achieved the highest production in May 2020.
During these five months, Iran produced more than 12 million tons of DRI (sponge iron), while India, as the previous first big producer of Sponge Iron produced 11 million tons.
One of the most important reasons for the increase in sponge iron production in Iran is the establishment of new Iran sponge iron factories and that in recent years, with its new strategies and with the participation of the private sector, it has been able to launch several sponge iron production projects and enter them the production circuit.
According to the reports, Iran also accounted for about 50% of the world’s production in May 2020. During this period, a total of 5.6 million tons of sponge iron was produced in the world in one month, after Iran, India was ranked second with 1.5 million tons of production. The country’s production fell by 55%; Iran, meanwhile, grew by 7.6 percent.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Iran’s DRI (Sponge Iron) industry stands as a beacon of resilience and innovation on the global stage. Despite facing challenging sanctions, the country has not only retained its position as the second-largest producer of Sponge Iron but has also emerged as the world’s largest producer in the first five months of the current year. The establishment of new factories and strategic initiatives, coupled with private sector participation, has propelled Iran’s sponge iron production to new heights, surpassing 12 million tons in the first five months alone. The industry’s ability to increase production by 7.6 percent during this period, while some major producers faced a decline, underscores Iran’s resilience and forward-thinking strategies. With a commitment to excellence, energy conservation, and safety measures, Iran’s DRI producers continue to lead the way, contributing significantly to the global landscape of sponge iron production.
