DRI (Direct Reduced Iron)

We enrich the meaning of quality

Iran production of Direct Reduced Iron (Sponge Iron) reached 3.026 million tons in January 2021 from 2.626 million tons in January 2020, increased by %15, according to the WSA.

While struggling with the U.S. strict economic sanctions, Iran is overcoming all obstacles making its mining sector moving forward noticeably despite its different industrial and economic sectors being affected by the limitations and difficulties caused by the sanctions condition.

Establishment of new sponge iron factories is one of the most important reasons for the growth in sponge iron production in Iran. In addition, in recent years, as a result of its new strategy and the participation of the private sector, several projects have been launched to produce DRI (sponge iron).

The high-quality nature of Iran Iron ore, natural gas resources with high carbon richness, and modern gas-based technology used at Iranian factories (Midrex), have paved the way for Iran sponge iron products to have many superiorities for steel plants, especially in Electric Arc Furnaces.  Some of these advantages which are happening during steel making process are as follows:

  • More reduction of Feo and send back Fe from Slag phase to melting Phase
  • Oxygen remained from injection is negligible (not suitable for casting)
  • Pasty Slag will generate without any graphite injection
  • Coke addition requirement will decrease sharply. This causes to save around 5.6 USD per kg Coke.
  • With the high carbon content of sponge iron – DRI, decreasing the cost of melt production is visible from 1% to 2.5 %, 10 US Dollars per ton.
  • With high carbon content of (up to 2.5 %), it will cause a significant decrease in energy consumption (up to 300KW/ton)

Furthermore, Iran`s entire sponge iron production is gas-based. This type of DRI can be shipped to distant destinations in containerized jumbo bags without any hazards and necessary precautions. However, for bulk shipment, there is some conservation based on IMSBC Codes.  Our experienced team is trained for safe carriage of bulk cargoes by MIL Netherland and is fully prepared to provide all services for bulk shipment including:

  • Purging pipe systems
  • N2 Gas Injection
  • ISO Tank and vaporizer
  • Supercargo (inspection under international authority)
