Sponge Iron – DRI

With regard to the significant number of direct reductions of Sponge Iron – DRI factories, both in operation or under construction, Iran is rapidly turning into the world`s biggest sponge iron producer. This is happening while the world`s two leading producers of sponge iron are experiencing a sharp decline in DRI production.

The high-quality nature of Iran’s Iron ore, natural gas resources with high carbon richness and modern gas-based technology used at Iranian factories (Midrex) have paved the way for Iran’s sponge iron products to have many superiorities for steel plants, especially in Electric Arc Furnaces. Some of these advantages happening during the making process are as follows:

• More reduction of Feo and sending back Fe from the Slag phase to the melting Phase.
• Oxygen remaining from the injection is negligible (not suitable for casting)
• Pasty Slag will generate without any graphite injection.
• Coke’s addition requirement will decrease sharply. This causes to save around 5.6 USD per kg Coke.
• With the high carbon content of sponge iron – DRI, decreasing the cost of melt production is visible from 1 to 2.5 %, 10 US Dollars per ton, so the sponge iron specification is so important.
• With a high carbon content of (up to 2.5 %), it will cause a significant decrease in energy consumption (up to 300KW/ton)

Furthermore, it should be noted that Iran’s entire sponge iron production is in class B. DRI class B can be shipped to distant destinations in containerized jumbo bags without any hazards and necessary precautions. But for bulk shipment of DRI, there is some conservation based on IMSBC Codes. So, we have an expert team trained for the safe carriage of bulk cargo by international organizations and is fully prepared to provide all services for bulk cargo, including:

• Purging pipe systems
• N2 Gas Injection
• ISO Tank and vaporizer
• Supercargo (inspection under international authority)
