Having the greatest Iron Ore mines in the region and rich reserves of energy especially natural gas has made Iran the top producer of steel in MENA. Based on the targeting done for enhancement of Iran steel production from 20 million tons to 55 million in 2025-2026, many more steel mills are under construction.
According to the World Steel Association (WSA), Iranian steel manufacturers produced 29.020 million tons of crude steel during 2020, rising from 25.609 million tons produced in 2019, 13.3% more. This is while the average global production has increased for 0.18 percent in 2020.
According to the WSA, alike the past two years, Iran stood at the 10th place among the world’s top steel producers in 2020, after China, India, Japan, and Russia.

Over the past years, the Iranian Steel industry has been constantly developing against all the obstacles, restrictions and pressures created by external factors such as the U.S. sanctions and the COVID19 pandemic that has affected severely the performance of the world’s top producers.

With construction of tens of gas based Direct Reduced Sponge Iron factories based on the most modern technology of Midrex, Iran has rapidly turned into world`s biggest sponge iron producer.
