Properties of Iran methanol
Methyl alcohol, more commonly known as methanol, is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive alcoholic odor. The production of methanol is mainly done by the industrial hydrogenation of carbon monoxide. Some of the properties of methanol are listed below:
- Appearance: Colorless liquid
- Odor: Sweet and pungent
- Density: 0.792 g/cm3
- Melting point: −97.6 °C
- Boiling point: 64.7 °C
- Flashpoint: 11 to 12 °C (52 to 54 °F; 284 to 285 K)
- Explosive limits: 6-36%
- Solubility in water: miscible
The main hazards of methanol are toxicity and flammability. Methanol is moderately toxic for small animals and highly toxic to large animals and humans. Ingested methanol can be fatal/lethal or cause blindness and damage to the liver, kidneys, and heart. Repeated overexposure to methanol has an accumulative effect on the central nervous system, especially the optic nerve. Methanol and its vapors are also flammable.
Application of Iran methanol
Iran Methanol is used for the production of numerous consumer and industrial manufactured goods. It is a substitute source for fuel, so it is evident that it is prevalent in our everyday lives.
Almost half of the world’s methanol is consumed in energy-related applications.
Methanol is increasingly common as a fuel for factories and electricity generation since it is quite efficient as an energy carrier.
There are many ways to use methanol as a fuel. It can be used on its own as a vehicle fuel. An alternative is to blend it directly into gasoline. The European Fuel Quality Directive permits fuel producers to combine up to 3% methanol, with an equal amount of co-solvent, with gasoline. The final product will be a high-octane, adequate fuel with reduced emissions than conventional gasoline. Although in order to optimize engine performance and fuel availability, a blend of ethanol, methanol, and petroleum is probable to be preferable to using any of the material mentioned above alone. Another alternative is to produce methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), a gasoline component that improves the quality of air, and dimethyl ether (DME), a clean-burning fuel with properties similar to propane. Methanol can also be employed as a clean-burning marine fuel that can cost-effectively meet the shipping industry’s increasingly strict emissions regulations.
Methanol has high potential as an environmentally sound fuel source, and the demand for it as an encouraging resource for a new era of clean energy is growing worldwide.
Other applications of methanol include using it as cooking fuel. It can also be used in thermal applications such as industrial boilers, furnaces, and kilns.
Methanol is used as a feedstock to produce various materials. It is used as a predecessor to other commodity chemicals, such as formaldehyde, acetic acid, methyl benzoate, anisole, peroxy acids. It also acts as a host to more specialized chemicals. These materials, in turn, are used in products like adhesives, foams, plywood subfloors, solvents, and windshield washer fluid.
Iran methanol market and suppliers
The methanol industry is one of the most dynamic sectors globally, and methanol is one of the three most important products of the global chemical industry.
The market of methanol is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5%, by value, during the 2020-2025 period. It is projected that the market will reach USD 20.4 billion in 2020 and is anticipated to reach USD 26.6 billion by 2025. The growing demand for methanol as fuel from the automotive industry is the main driving factor for Methanol market growth.
Global methanol capacity is anticipated to see considerable growth by 2030, potentially increasing from 148.44 Mtpy in 2019 to 310.94 Mtpy in 2030, registering a total growth of 109%. With the capacity additions expected from Russia, Iran, and the U.S., these three countries will subsidize around 59% of the total global methanol capacity additions.
Iran identifies as the second-highest country in terms of capacity additions, with a capacity of 29.39 Mtpy by 2030. Major capacity additions will be led by the Mahan Chemical Zagros Petrochemical Methanol Plant, with a capacity of 1.85 Mtpy by 2030. In the past two years, Iranian methanol’s capacity has nearly doubled to 12 million mt in 2020. This capacity surge is due to the start-up of the Pars Kimiya and Bushehr facilities, both located in Assaluyeh.
Based on planned and announced additions, Iran’s capacity could grow to above 30 million mt by 2030, according to market sources, making it the largest exporter of methanol. Iran is set to have large capacity additions of 36.71 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) by 2030. Among these, 30.11 Mtpa is expected to come from planned plants, while 6.60 Mtpa is expected to come from the announced plants. The country is set to bring online 20 planned, and four announced plants during the outlook period.
Currently, Iran holds 10% of the world’s share in methanol production, and its industrial exports include the markets of 159 countries, including Iraq, China, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, and India.
The National Petrochemical Company, Kaveh Glass Industry Group, and Public Joint Stock Company are the most prominent players in the Iranian industry. Iran has the second-largest petrochemical output in the Middle East, next to Saudi Arabia.
