The most significant use of cement is the creation of concrete and mortar, and besides the bonding of natural or artificial aggregates to form a strong building material; which is durable in the face of normal environmental effects.
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the most normally used cement for an extensive range of applications. These applications cover ordinary, standard, high-strength concretes, masonry and plastering works, and precast concrete goods.
The ASTM has selected five types of Ordinary Portland Cement, designated Types I to V. In fact, chemically and physically, these types of cement differ mainly in their content of C3A and in their fineness. Regarding their performance, they vary mostly in the rate of early hydration and in their capability to resist sulfate attack. Therefore, the general features of these five types are listed in the below table.
Ordinary Portland Cement Specifications
Type | Classification | Applications | Characteristics |
---|---|---|---|
Type I | General purpose | General construction (most buildings, bridges, pavements, precast components) | Fairly high C3S content for good early strength development |
Type II | Moderate sulfate resistance | Constructions exposed to soil or water containing sulfate ions | Low C3A content (<8%) |
Type III | High early strength | Quick structure, cold weather concreting | Ground more finely, may have slightly more C3S |
Type IV | Low heat of hydration (deliberate reacting) | Gigantic structures such as dams | Low content of C3S (<50%) and C3A |
Type V | High sulfate resistance | Constructions exposed to high levels of sulfate ions | Very low C3A content (<5%) |
White | White color | Decorative usage (otherwise has properties similar to Type I) | No C4AF, low MgO |
